Announcing Daniel Ruggeri as Executive Vice President of the Apache Software Foundation

Inhalt

The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) has appointed Daniel Ruggeri to be the new Executive Vice President (EVP) of The ASF. A History of Contribution Daniel’s journey with The ASF began with a practical necessity: fixing a problem he encountered at work. While serving as a server administrator at Mastercard, he submitted a patch to address a proxy issue in the Apache HTTP Server. Daniel was motivated by a desire to fix bugs he’d found and also avoid maintaining those code fixes for the Apache HTTP Server locally. When the patches he submitted were accepted into the next HTTP release, he was hooked. Daniel soon realized that The ASF was genuinely interested in him as a participant, not just looking for “free labor.” He eventually presented at ApacheCon and was invited to become a committer, which solidified his role within the community. A longstanding ASF member and open source evangelist, Daniel also previously served on the ASF board from 2019 to 2021. His professional background is in managing web and cloud infrastructure, leading large teams, and managing big budgets. He views The ASF community as welcoming and more like a family than an organization. A Focus on Operations In his new EVP role, Daniel’s primary interest is focused on servant leadership and maintaining operational excellence. He emphasizes that his role is not about setting organizational direction; that is the board’s job. Instead, he plans to utilize his background in infrastructure to help keep the organization running smoothly. Daniel is committed to “keeping the operations going” and “keeping the ship running.” He believes his experience leading large teams and managing substantial budgets should be beneficial for potential operational improvements, and he has already begun exploring ideas with ASF President Ruth Suehle.
